I came up with this idea today while trying to figure out how to reduce the chances of my trail camera from being stolen

I decide to secure it with a lock using the following flat hanger strapping.
Plus I used screws thru the holes to secure it to the tree on each side of the lock. Plus I double wrapped/folded the strapping where the lock was attached to prevent fatigue bending to snap it. It may not stop it completely from being stolen but at least it will slow down a theft enough to think twice about it.

I also installed the nylon strap as normal which covers and hides the metal strapping so if a theft does try a knife to cut it they will surely and may destroy a good hunting blade. rofl.gif

Interesting. Would love to see a field picture of the whole setup. I've had 4 camera's vanish in the last 3 years. 10.gif

I will be visiting it in a couple of days. so I will do so then. But then again if it does not work then there will be no picture to be had 15_weeping.gif

The only option however to remove the camera from the tree is to smash it off. Unless you have the proper screw drivers ( I used three large screws all with different heads). Plus two different padlocks

Knock on wood!

Bad thing about that here in PA is that you can't damage a tree in any way (other then rough up th bark only) on any state/National Forest, etc.. The only place it would work is if you are on private property with the owners permission. Seems like you said they would really have to work at it. Is bad now in our society that you must use security and it is only honored by honest people.

Don't understand how they go missing. i can see it if in a city on a light pole. People in the bush should be outdoors people not thieves. Where are we going. Oh for the old days when you could leave things out and they would be there when you came back.

I've had three in the past 2 years go missing Two of them I hadn't even had locks on. One of those was just bungeed to the tree I they looked as if they just grabbed the camera and took off as the bungee hooks were streched to the max and straighten out. A year later same tree I forgot to take security measures with me, set up anyways, figured to return later that week and sucure it, when I returned it was already gone. The rest of them I used aircraft cable to lock them to the tree that work till the end of September when they had returned with something an cut the farest camera off the tree.

This year I have yet to but cameras out but when I do they will be 10-12' high angled down as well as being locked.

I used the python locks until this year when they cut them off with bolt cutters. Also took 4 stands that belonged to the guy on the next property and one from the guy that hunts next to me. I figure the cam took a pic of them and they stole it. They just need to carry a small set of bolt cutters and away they go. I also camo mine and sometimes I can't find it 10.gif . I figure it must have been getting dark and the flash gave the cam location away.

Mine are small and camoed but I keep them locked and I put them in dirty places where I don't think other people will walk. Secondary trails that are difficult to walk along for people but deer use them.

I find tresspassers take the clear easy route and won't walk through the dirty stuff. I haven't lost any yet and I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Not sure if I'll do this but someone was telling me the other day to put a little sticker on the trail cam box saying "This unit is GPS enable" They said thieves will think twice about taking it if they beleive they can be tracked.
