I impulsively bought a Bushnell 3x9 for my 45-70, having tested the new LeveRevolution ammo this gun is a 200 yarder no problem. But the 3x9 is just too big and mounted too far back. 3x is even too much mag for close shots. Should I put my Millet red-dot (which I love) back on an forget about scopes??

You should forget about 45-70's and get a .270..........keep the 3x9 and kill stuff a long, long, long way away. w00t.gif

I'll get a .270 when I move to Kanasas, speak with a hamhock accent and wait for 30lb Pronghorn next to a water hole and a windmill. Laie_22.gif

Get yourself a Leupold 1x4 x20 VARIXII and you will be all set. It has amazing eye releif that is very forgiving so when you snap up the rifle you get an instant clear shot view. With a 45-70 a 4x is all you will ever need. The red dots are quick but no hell in poor light. The scope will buy you extra shooting time in the morning and evening.

Yup.....even if the water hole is 500 plus yards away.

First off, that's a very funny answer rofl.gif rofl.gif beer_cheers.gif

Secondly. Let's not get carried away here CC, it's only a .270.
To shoot any rifle at extreme distances like 500yds needs alot more practice to shoot consistantly than you may think. Anyone can fluke a shot once in a while but to be effective and most importantly lethal at extreme ranges is another story. I myself shoot a .280 rem for deer wich shoots flatter than the 270 win and am a very capable shooter, I wouldn't even attemp a shot a that distance cause I think the animal I am after deserves to be taken cleanly. I don't want any doubts after I pull the trigger, as I'm guessing most hunters don't. At that distance, MOST seasonal hunters can't tell me that they are sure of their shot at 500 yds on game. At 500yds with a 270 win you are anywhere from 42" to 50" below target, thats hard to judge and compensate for that far away. I have a Zeiss Conquest Scope with Rapid Z Recticle that is marked to 600yds but ALOT of practice is required before the average hunter can take game at that distance. 8.gif

As Terry suggests I've got a 1-4x Vari X 11 Shotgun scope with Leupold quick release rings on my 45-70, I will admit to being a scope adict so there really is no option for me, to each his own however.

I think all you need for that old snowmobile stand you call a rifle is a peep sight.
