So my 2006 Pro tournament career comes to an end... ohmy.gif Me and my brother had a great time and caught lots of fish for the five days we were out on the water. I spent over an hour writing a story and filling in with pictures and lost it to an accidental "page back". That is a piss off... angry.gif Anyway, I'll do a shorter version with pics.... smile.gif

After spending Monday with our own Scott Benussa looking at deer land I headed down the 502 and took this picture from the highway...

We stayed at a relative's house. Erwin and Carol Peitela. The last time had seen them was in Nestor Falls 15 years ago at my grandparents... I remembered Irwin quite well. I remember someone with energy and enthusiasm who loved to tell stories and allways seemed to have a smile. He hasn't changed... biggrin.gif

Here is Irwin with a shed he found last fall. It has a broken off point right at the base you can't see between the G3 and G4. Now that is the kind of young buck you like to see. Talk about genetics.

Here's the buck I got to see every time I went to get bait...... ohmy.gif

A couple other nice ones at the samee store. See, even though I'm fishing I'm still thinking about whitetails!! Morgan was trying to get me to turn that switch off for awhile... rolleyes.gif

I did see a picture in another store of a fantastic buck harvested by a youth hunter from Southern Ontario and gave the store owner contact information for Ontario Monster Whitetail magazine. The people were very friendly!!

I love the pics, and glad to hear you had a very good time.Seeing close friends after so long will always bring out the stories and memories, surprised you had enough time to fish wink.gif
I especially like the buck in the one pic,he is huge.I am guessing it was shot years ago in the area.Wonder what he scores as a non-typical?

O.K. let's talk some fishing. Wednesday we got out on the water but got chased off the lake three times by rain and squals. Never really got to do any fishing or exploring so we finally played poker in the camper and drank beer.... blink.gif

Thursday we put in a good day fishing in the morning with Irwin along showing us some of his spots close by where he can often get his walleye. Most spots produced fish for us but not any size. Later that day me and morgan went out and explored much of the main lake and went to Butler Lake through a twisting river system that was wide and expansive, choked with weeds and all sorts of flora and fauna. It felt like we were in the everglades twisting and turning at high speed in 2 feet of water. We went in slow but after that wide open as when a boat is on plane and going fast the motor doesn't draft as much water and sit's higher.

Morgan caught this dandy 29" 8.5lb walleye in butler while casting a bottom bouncer with a gold spinner rig and worm harness. I was using his Aqua-Vu for the first time and was blown away by the numbers of fish I saw and other stuff like old cans, lures and even an old cruise-a-day. We would look for likely structure like reefs and main lake points and he would fish with jigs, bottom bouncers, flukes, stick baits while I looked for actual fish on the Aqua-Vu. Of course I had a line out too. I would tail hook a large minnow on a slip bobber rig.... biggrin.gif . Worked quite well too!

user posted image

Friday we went out to Contact Bay and Mile Lake and nailed the fish again. Irwin caugt this 26.5" 6.4 lb walleye.... smile.gif Just a white jig and a worm. The wind was from the West both Thursday and Friday and there was a good chop on the lake! We were going into the tournament pretty confident we could do well especially after catching some good sized walleye and many in the 2-4.5 lb range.

Tournament day and no wind!!! None at all!!! The lake was as clam as glass.. dry.gif

Getting ready to blast off in the morning...some other very nice boats!!

Morgan on the electonics. Notice the stained colour of Wabigoon in background. Locals say that the lake is clear at ice out and over the winter so obviously it is wind and possibly runoff that silts up the lake with mud and sediment. Some very nice homes on the lake including Chris Prongers home. It's the biggest... rolleyes.gif

We caught lot's of fish during the tournament including about 30 pike, 10 smallmouth and couple of rock bass. The biggest walleye was about 3.5 lbs on day one and the rest were under 18 inches. We lost a big 6-7 lb walleye at the boat at about 3:20 on day one. If we caught that we would have been close to the lead....we both fell on the floor of the boat and cried sad.gif . Day two we kind of flamed out not getting into any size. We had our limit in about 25 minutes yet we just couldn't get the big ones other than a few 8-10 lb pike that got us excited. So that's fishing! We will likely go back next year and will come back with guns blazing. Top 10 or bust..... biggrin.gif

My Dad's boat, Morgan is getting the pleasure of using it for going into a bunch of tounaments this summer. I have a 16" with 50 horse tiller that is fairly old but does the trick. I go out on Superior all the time with it. Used to take a 14 foot and a 20 out on the big lake. Just have to watch the weather...... smile.gif

oh man, when I saw this thread, I kicked myself,, I said I was gonna make it there this year, and completely slipped my mind blink.gif gggrrrrr

what amazing pics, and thank you for bringing me back a few years,, ah yes,, there is one picture you have there with the shores of Wabigoon Lake in the background,, the caved in clay banks,, and boy did that ring home for me,, I was raised on this lake, and know Contact Bay,, Mile Lake and Trap Lake well,, the mill there, the arm that takes you there,, just as your going into the big water,, you'll look across the lake,, and that's where we used to go,, "camp" was our word we used, for that awsome cottage. spent many many many summers there,, and still go occasionally to visit, although it's NOWHERE the same as what it used to be,, my aunt (original owner) her daughter and husband added onto "camp" and modernized it,, now it sux there sad.gif

you know Anderson's Island? I remember me, my mom and dad, my sis and brother used to jump into the canoe, and canoe around the island,, what great memories smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

I am just sorry I couldn't come to meet up with you, like we had talked about,, sad.gif ah well, another time perhaps

Sue

Hey Sue, I'll be going back next year and if you can dig up any fishing secrets about the lake give me a holler! I never even dropped a line in Dinorwic lake so I wonder if that was a mistake but you just can't fish it all! biggrin.gif I'm going to have to do some more posting in our fishing section to get things going here!!!

Awesome! I don't mind sharing with you whatever I've learned in Dryden! I will be back next year. Morgan is going to Shebandewan this year, we have fished it a bit but have lots to learn. I've done the Geraldton tournament twice and Nakina once. Never seem to crack the money but always do respectable. I've learned a lot of techniques but still love the simplicity of a jig with live bait..... biggrin.gif

Great article and pics Bro!

That was actually the first time I saw that 8 and a half pounder since I caught it!
Too bad we couldn't hit one during the tournament. All in all it was a great event and I had a blast. Nothing better than spending a day out on the water. Maybe next year we will crack the top ten!

Oh, and I thank all of those who cheered me on in the Fort Francis Bass Tournament. I had the time of my life. Finishing number 2 amongst some of North America's best smallmouth fisherman is an honor I will never forget. My heros Chip leer and Norm Lindsay even came up and congradulated me. It was a magical day.

Good times. Good times.

Perhaps I will post some pics of the tourney in the near future.

Tight lines,

Morgan. biggrin.gif

LOL...yote....Morgan and his partner Doug earned some other cash prizes too...anyway I know morgan enjoys hunting birds and use to hunt ducks and geese back in the day but he is a hard core fisherman and not a big game hunter...at least not yet. I'm working on him....lol. So, I think most of tht money will be headed towards more fishing stuff.... biggrin.gif

Morgan, please do post any pictures you have! I would love to see them.... biggrin.gif

and the colour of the water is different huh? loads of clay in that lake,, and it sure gets stirred up,, I remember way back when when they used to move logs around in the big ol booms,, with the big tug boats.. (don't ANYBODY run with that angry.gif ) LOL and the bark on the bottom of the lake. blink.gif

the fish that come out of that lake are really light too huh? I remember when I started fishing here,, how dark they were in comparison huh.gif
